Steel City Mini DH - 21st April

by Steel City Series on 3rd March 2012

2011's Steel City DH race took the local scene by storm. Backed by a World Champ, the entry list was as impressive as the racing. For 2012 the guys are back, putting the 'Series' in the Steel City, on an all new purpose built track. Entries open 13th March. 200 places only so get in soon for a chance to race!

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural event we’re currently organising 2012’s race. Sheffield’s own Downhill World Champion and multiple World Cup Winner, Steve Peat, presents the city’s second official Mini Downhill race, in association with the Wildlife Trust and ThisISheffield.co.uk.

It will be held on Saturday 21st April on a brand new and purpose built track currently under construction by BikeTrack (www.biketrack.org).

Details of the track and project are on the Ride Sheffield site:

More details about the race will be released as soon as they are confirmed so keep visiting www.StevePeat.com/SteelCitySeries as well as Facebook and Twitter feeds for Steel City.

Race Info

Held in aid of the Greno Woods appeal, the event will be held in Grenoside Woods, Sheffield. Open to all ages from 10 years and up, the race track will be fast and flowing, suiting mid travel trail bikes and riders who can carry speed!

We will be holding a trail dig day up at the site on the 24th of March and need as much help as possible to finish off the track. As this will be fresh trail, please resist the temptation to ride it. This will likely ruin it and spoil all of our enjoyment for the race and the future of biking in Greno. Please read this Ride Sheffield posting for more information.

The all important entries will go live at 6pm on the 13th March via www.StevePeat.com/SteelCityDH. We are going to increase the entry numbers this year to 200 but it will still be on a first come, first served basis. We are not able to guarantee any places other than for event sponsors. Interested in Sponsoring the event? Please get in touch at SteelCitySeries@gmail.com

Greno Wood Appeal

The Greno Woodland appeal is an on-going fund raising campaign, where the local community is attempting to raise £1 million to buy the forest back.

This would secure the woodlands use and maintenance for years to come, with Mountain Biking being one of the many activities in mind. All profits from the race will go directly to the Wildlife Trusts appeal.

Testimonys from last year's event

“The steel city series was a great example of a community driven biking event that trumps much larger and pricier races. Local bikeshops, local beer, local heroes and a great showing from all ages of the local biking fraternity racing for a local cause, great stuff. The track was pitched at a perfect level so that all biking types could enjoy it, while still providing a challenge for the top levels. Everyone involved in putting this race together deserve a great deal of praise, I sincerely hope we see more steel city events in the future."
Simon Choppin

You’ve tapped into something here; a race venue on the doorstep of one of Englands biggest cities, which is stuffed full of bikers. Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham aren’t far away, and they’re strong biking hot-spots too."

* "Downhill racing the way it’s meant to be
* A really good fun fast flowy track - easy enough, but hard enough
* Not at all intimidating – I’ve never felt so relaxed listening to the starting pips
* 15mins easy walking to the top of a 2minute track
* I’ve Never had so many practice runs before a race
* The fastest time of the day was set on an xc bike
* Spectator friendly course – bring your cow bells!
Adam Wiles

"Yup, that was a smooth operation. Professional, dedicated and focussed.

Well done indeed."
Tom Mitchell

See you all in the Woods on the 21st April!
